indie = independant. its not a type of music.
This kid knows what he talking about.

Indie is independant. Like do it yourself, no record label. Kind of like how Puff daddy, p diddy, diddy, whatever the hell his name is made that 'bad boys records'..

yes thats true BUT indie rock IS a genre of music...trust me theres lots of it in UK and theyre all usually labelled either indie rock / indie or alternative

"indie rock is a term used to refer to rock music that falls within the indie music movement. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with indie music as a whole, though more specifically implies that the music meets the criteria of being rock, as opposed to indie pop, indie dance or other possible matchups. These criteria vary from an emphasis on rock instrumentation (electric guitars, bass guitar and live drums) to more abstract (and debatable) rockist constructions of authenticity"

e.g. taken from myspace band genres

Arctic Monkeys
Trip Hop / Rock / Indie

Bloc Party
Alternative / Indie / Rock

Franz Ferdinand
Indie / Rock

Nine Black Alps
Alternative / Rock / Indie

blah blah etc

interpol/coldplay/franz ferdinand are all pretty good. in general though i think indie rock gets old. when you listen to it alot it gets boring, but thats just my opinion

yeah but that also means that indie rock isnt all soft shit. dispatch can make as much noise as anyone else and there are lots of punk/reggae (not really ska tho) bands who consider themselves indie rock. indie is just true alternative. alternative was originally not mainstream but its just become mainstream so people opposed to the establishment just started doing it themselves and hence indie

edit: hm. didnt realize there was a second page of posts w.e read it anyways. ignore the first 6 words
