Anyone know any standards or play in combos/big bands? I play guitar and pretty much learn as many Charlie Parker tunes as I possibly can haha. Anyone else?

I just play at school, yesterday i had a concert for whats called Inter County Band, its the kids that actually know what they're doing from 7th-9th grade in my area. We played Take the A Train, an arrangement of Summertime, I Let a Songo Through my Heart, and an arrangement of In the Mood. I play Bari Sax.

Nice man. I had an audition yesterday for jazz, I played Donna Lee. Pretty much the best tune ever haha. How many people are in your combo?

I play string bass in a jazz combo every once in a while.

Don't you run cross country? I play string bass too. Are you my twin? Uprights represent! hahaha. I play bass guitar too when it's called for. I play in a 4 piece rhythm section combo (bass, piano, guitar, drums) at a couple of country clubs/ yacht clubs for some money on the side. I'd like to get a steady every-weekend gig going for this summer but we'll see. I mostly listen to Stanley Clarke, Avery Sharpe, Cannonball Adderly, Charlie Haden, Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, Brian Culbertson, Victor Wooten, and just a little bit of Miles Davis.

Niiice. Cannonball Adderley's "Somethin' Else" is in of the best albums I've ever listened to. What tunes do you guys like playing?

Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band

My teacher uses Gordon Goodwin arrangements nonstop. We're doing his arrangements of Punta Del Sol and That's Life. I also listen to a lot of ska when I get the chance, I would love to be in a Ska band but there's like 4 people in my area that actually like it as well.

My favorite 3 songs of all time are Harlem Nocturne, any arrangement, Out Back of the Barn (its a Bari feature), and Jericho by Chris Sharp. I'm also in the process of learning the jazz opener to Monsters, Inc. on my Tenor Sax

this is the 1st Alto's solo, followed by me on bari, and the opening for the tenor solo for Inter County Jazz Band. I'm in 9th grade for those who will ask. Sorry for the crappy quality

Hahahaha "on the spot improv." If you're improvising something then it's always "on the spot." Did you mean that you didn't practice and then just somehow made that up? Probably not. A word of advice, lay back on the swing, it felt choppy and mehanical. Lay backkkk man.

I'm in a Jazz Combo here at UNC Chapel Hill and I've taken two of the Jazz classes and am enrolled in one and I'll be taking the fourth eventually.
I play guitar.

We're playing:
Groovin' High
and Woody N' You
in class (Jazz Improv 2),

and in my combo:
Oleo
A Night In Tunisia
Lullaby in Birdland
for now.

We're gonna add a blues, a minor blues, a latin tune, and probably another up tune.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Some good tunes man. Oleo is so tight, especially if its played mach speed haha. You should do Billie's Bounce for a blues, or maybe Freddie Freeloader. If you're gonna do a bop tune do Impressions or Donna Lee, you can get pretty creative with both. What kind of guitar do you have?

This thread is the bomb. Whoever quoted my Gordon Goodwins Big Phat Band, I'm very jealous. I wish my high school band could play those songs but they're so tough. Maybe your arrangements are simplified or your band is just good. I thought only college bands would be able to play them. They're so crazy and intricate and tough. On a side note, about a week ago I got to go to a concert where a trombone player named Wycliffe Gordon was playing. He's basically a superhuman player. Check him out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIJFlqWYVUU

I would call out Donna Lee the next time our combo coach mentions an up tune but the head is ridiculous...
I've played Impressions in class and a modal tune would be cool but eh.. And Billie's Bounce would be cool. I'm not too familiar with Freddie Freeloader. Thanks for the suggestions!!

Oh and we're playing Oleo at 208+ haha, so fun.

This is my guitar:

PRS SE Custom Semi-Hollow in Tobacco Sunburst. The Korean version so it's cheaper but it's so nice.
