Jazz

Jazz is the best. Chet Baker is on top of my list right now, Charlie Parker is getting up there, and Antonio Carlos Jobim has been up there forever. And of course Vince Guaraldi, especially since it's December so it's appropriate to listen to the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack.

Allan Holdsworth, Ambrose Akinmusire, Anthony Wilson, Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, Grant Green, Bill Evans, Charlie Parker, Chick Corea, Chris Potter, Christian Scott, Clifford Brown, Count Basie Orchestra, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Django Reinhart, Duke Ellington, Eric Alexander, Esperanza Spalding, George Benson, Jamey Aebersold, Jim Ketch, Jody Fischer, John Coltrane, JohnMclaughlin, John Pizzarelli, Joshua Redman, Keith Jarret, Kenny Burrell, Kenny Garret, Kevin Eubanks, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Michael Brecker, Mike Oria, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny, Robert Glasper, Roy Hargrove, Stephen Anderson, Steven Riley, Tal Farlow, Thad Jones, Theolonious Monk, Vijay Iyer Trio, and Wynton Marsalis.

I'm not just a jazz fan though, I play jazz guitar and it's slowly becoming my main priority in life.

I don't listen to as much jazz as I should. I play Bari Sax in my school's Jazz Band though. I really enjoy the big band swing style along with latin.

Oscar Peterson, Cannonball Adderley, Miles, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery. Only a couple I can think of that Tyler didn't mention.

Oh yeah, ever heard of Julian Lage? Cause he's the best guitar player on Earth.

really like his "freddie freeloader" as well, but it's a bit too much sax for me, and I really hate alto, though love a good jazz clarinet and tenor sax. Love Davis but soooo much of his shit is sexy stuff which isn't my cup of tea

been listening to buddy rich solos as well

probably dump this thread soon when I feel like it. Anyone here make their own jazz music? Been playing trombone for 7 years but I want to learn to play sax and trumpet, eventually piano. I really love music.

Fuck yes dude, my combo has a bass bone and it's sick. Good trombonists are soo enjoyable.

Greg, that album rules.

More:
Somethin' Else - Cannonball Adderley
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew, Kind of Blue
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Hank Mobley - Soul Station
Wes Montgomery -Smokin' at the Half Note

I can't think of any really right now, I'll post more tomorrow or something.

My friend who plays tenor gave me a list of definitive saxophone albums to get started listening to good jazz saxophone with. I'll post what he wrote down later.

As far as good jazz guitar:

Wes Montgomery - Smokin at the Half Note
- The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery

Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue (i think that's the name)

Those are some great ones to get started with.

that was awesome. I wonder how much of that was improvised and how much of it was arranged? I've seen a very small amount of his other stuff and he seems more of a classical player than a jazz guy. just a thought.

Probably a fair amount of both. He is a classical player, he studied at San Francisco Conservatory. He's crazy dude, he's only 24 or 25 and has degrees from San Fran, Berklee (where he now teaches), Ali Akbar, one more school I forget, played with Santana when he was 7, played with Christian McBride, Gary Burton and countless others. He's truly incredible and in a way has lived multiple lifetimes thus far, and still has so much more life left. It's weird to think about.
