Possible problems: its gonna be hard to get the spring to be compressed while the bars are clamped on the fork. also,ur bars are gonna start sliding up and u might need a longer forktube.

if they made headsets where the top cup cant be separated into other pieces, the would solve the need for any compression. so it would pretty much be a "1 piece headset topcup." sounds wack, but then again, they invented the gyro brake thing on bikes which was crazy at the time.

A few problems I see:

Bottom cup/bearings being loose.

INABILITY to tighten/loosen headset without having the bars be clamped higher or lower on the fork (which could suck)

But hey, like all good ideas, just try it and tell us how it is. Post pics/results as well

like Jacek said, i think the best solution would be just to make a "1 piece top cup" that would solve the whole problem of using compression and would also make the scooter lighter. maybe there should be cheap one pice top cups that you replace every so often and the bottom cups stayy

sorry for massive bump but i came up with a new idea
so people were saying how it wudnt bring the fork up it wud only push up on the bars until eventually they wud slide right off. well if you put ur fork on with your spring resting on the top headset cap, you pin were the spring is so it pushes the top cap down, while pulling the bottom of the fork up, and its not pushing up on your bars. so you just put your bars resting on the pin and tighten your clamp.
what do you guys think? i dont mind constructive critisism

that might actually work, you could also get over sized bars and maybe slide them over the spring, kinda like a hic?

WARNING: OPINION

-You loose adjustablity of the tightness unless you go out and buy another spring.
Springs, after long periods of time tend to become shorter.

-People will bring the springs to full compression for extra tightness, and they will weaken the spring.

-The force of the spring against the top cap of the headset and the bottom of the bars will scrape and scratch the surfaces

-The added resistance from the friction of those two rubbing on each other will cause un-needed turning resistance
Sorry, I failed at understanding headsets.

Good idea, but some flaws happen with every plan. I love to be proven wrong though.

ok its a good idea but its not gonna work...
when u hold a spring down for a long period of time it gets compressed there for no more compression
even if it did work if you landed really hard the force you put on the bars would loosen the spring's pressure (only for that quick time) and break your headset bearings it may make no sence at first but just think of it you will understand
EDIT:^^^ IT WOULD NOT LEAVE "UN NEEDED" TURNING resistance because the top cap turns with the movement on the bars and fork (just had to "prove you wrong" like u wanted someone to do:) haha^^^^

very good idea, i dont see much wrong with it. raises you bars also. but as they said there would be no use for it as you can do similar with a spacer and some grub screws and install it like a hic then take the shim off and put standard bars on, like a seatpost compression that wont move

yea sorry if you dont, ill try to make one on paint right now cuz my fork is too short for it

hope this helps :)
