Looking for a decent camera?

I'm looking for one because I need it for my coursework, and I'm taking a trip to America in two weeks, looking for a session on American Lands. So need to take home some pictures. Any input would be appreciated.

Whats your budget man? Not sure how much your looking to spend. Also, whats your experience with them? It would help narrow down the choices between newbie cameras and more professional ones.
