Making a fork.

So apparently my dad has access to a welder for free. I'm planning on making a fork sometime. So what thickness should i use for the plate that attaches to the legs? Also what should i use for the legs, square tubing?

Lol okay, and can you weld chromo with a MIG welder? and is it even worth making a chromo fork??

i am pretty sure chromo plate is expensive and hard to get.
