Need help figuring out what is wrong...

Okay, so this is my first scooter, any help is GREATLY appreciated! So I bought a 2007 Roketa MC-17-150cc, it definitely needs some TLC, but I knew that when I bought it. The guy who I bought it from wasn't quite sure what was wrong with it. So the problem is it takes a few good kicks to get it started, then it will die if you do not keep it throttled. I kept it throttled for about 15-30 seconds and then I just let off, and allowed it to die, then the engine began to smoke for about 20+ seconds and it smelled like fire. Any ideas what the cause would be or what to do first?
