ehhh i know someone who put one of the old film lenses on a d40 and what they had to do was set the aperture ring at the maximum aperture of 22, thats probobly what your is and it works fine
but thats with the d40....
if that doesnt work your going to either get a light meter or plug the film speed aperture and shutter into another camera and then put that stuff in the FE to take a properly exposed picture, but its probobly less of a hassle just to buy a nice fresh 50mm f 1.8 for it that works with the light meter
i dont know if your familiar but keh.com has great deals, buy a lens in bgn condition there and it will be fine
