I got myself banned.
Its a wire used to transfer data. Most mini dv cameras have a port for it, and you can play back video through the wire into your computer and capture the footage onto your computer for editing/viewing purposes.

I could be wrong here (most likely I am) but I think it transfers at a higher quality than USB.

I think Brian would be better off answering the question.

Yeah theres the tech info from James. Firewire is ALOT better for video because is delivers the data at a constant speed. USB tends to be jumpy and can cause dropped frames ect... And quality wise, with firewire, your getting the same exact image as your camera shows you as long as you capture on your computer uncompressed (if your capturing in movie maker, pick dv avi for the setting), USB quality is shitty from what i have seen.

ahh thats why when i upload video from my usb cord it has some of these random black spots and bad quality. can i just buy firewire at a store?

Yeah, but you need to check if your computer has a firewire port in it allready. If it doesn't you need to get a card to put in your computer too. If you get it from a store it could run you like 40-50 dollars, ebay could cost like you $10 total for both the card and wire. Its up to you where you wanna get it.
