Yeah you definitely don't need them all the way through. And your best bet for reinforcing (besides what Greg said) is welding stuff.

i bolt em, works really good

i used to do that too, but it works like ten times better if you dont bolt it all the way through. just bolt the side that way it clamps the dropout to the deck, but still do it on both sides

I'd say if you can get it welded, get it welded, but if not just bolt it.

Like i said, if you're gonna bolt it, then it will not prevent it from cracking, because it can still snap directly behind the deck leaving the two 1.5" dropout pieces still welded/bolted under the deck.

I'd say welding some reinforcement pipes to the sides might save the dropouts.
