Should i use painters tape to cover the grip or just take it off and put it back on again?

take it off and buy new grip.

either use the tape very precisely or take it off with a heat gun/hair dryer and peel off carefully no sticky shiz on your deck

or if your planning on replacing your geiptape soon then just take it off and replace it
