The value of life..

the_SD_local

I own SR.
I believe our generation has a disease. Narcissism. I'm sure it is worse in the states than anywhere else but the youth of America and the world in general, thanks to the media, has become a generation of self centered, inconsiderate morons. When our parents and grandparents were growing up the world was a different place. There were wars, depressions, recessions and everything was in shambles. During those times I think people realized that the only true value in life is life itself and they took advantage of that and looked out for one another as well. Nowadays people have way too much money, are way too fat and don't care about anything that doesn't effect the little technological bubble they live in. Really I blame the abuse of technology and the media (which is a result of technology) for creating this generation of narcissists. You no longer even need to leave your home to interact with your "friends" because it can all be done online. Instead of talking to people on public transit people just plug in their headphones and tune everyone out. After removing yourself from humanity this much people actually start believing in the delusion they are living that they are the only important person in the world and that no one else matters. Then if that isn't bad enough the media comes along and reinforces this mindset by telling people they need to look the best, dress the best, act a certain way, buy more of this or that as if they are the center of the universe and they should only be concerned with their appearance and their material possessions. The world is run on greed and greed alone. The only reason the media tries to influence people is not because they actually care how you look, act or dress but because you have money to spend and they want it so whatever method of brainwashing they can figure out they will try it and the saddest part is most people fall for it and continue the cycle. Like I said, the world was a different place when our parents and grandparents grew up. Very few people were "rich" and most were just working to get by. With the current downfall of the world economy I can only hope for another full blown depression to open up peoples eyes. Maybe for once people will place some kind of value on real relationships with people they know and people they will only maybe meet once in their life; place some kind of value on life as a whole, not just their own; place some kind of value on experiences, life, love and laughter instead of placing all value on their possessions and themselves.

I believe there is still hope for this world. It is just disgusting that it ever got to this point and that it is going to take so much to reverse it.

Hopefully you are able to make the connection here to your story. The connection being that the reason those guys acted like that towards that girl is because modern society is training them not to care about anyone but themselves so they saw nothing wrong with tormenting an innocent needy person.

That is all.

Wow man, just wow.
That was incredibly deep, and i feel like you're going to get about 10 people (including myself) on this site who will actually understand what you just wrote..
It's an amazing perspective on the world, and it really makes you think about the way society is run..
In my view, society used to be about a community, a network of people that helped each other in any way they could offer..
But now society has turned commercial, and its all about making people believe they don't NEED to help anyone, they don't NEED to care about anything other than themselves.

Thanks for that insight Andrew.

I agree with Andrew pretty much and i was just thinking about this tonight on the beach. There's something seriously wrong with people these days, this world has changed in ways that our ancestors could have only dream of in some kind of nightmare. I don't completely blame technology, from what Andrew was saying, but these days it's a risk going places and doing things in certain areas or because of your nationality, that's wrong. People think they're so fucking tough and can do whatever they want, they should think of somebody else and not be so fucking self centered and revolve the whole earth around them. And especially all the judgemental ass holes we've got, UGH. Everyone needs to get along. Go back like 35-40+ years ago, how everyone was getting along during the days of peace and flower power, nothing was wrong, sure there were people provoking situations here and there but everyone was high as shit and getting along, families were still raising their kids the right way as they've known for ages. This world needs a change, soon.

Well that's because they needed to rely on each other in order to stay alive. Take for example parts of newfoundland (I've been there before so I'm using it as an example). All the people you meet there are super nice, and trustworthy, because in their culture, they needed to rely on each other in order to stay alive for the longest time, and in some places there it's still like that. Over there, you can forget your wallet, etc. on a public bench and expect it to be returned to you within the next day or two (this might be a bit of an exaggeration, but just from what I've seen and heard, I don't doubt that it is possible), while take toronto, where I live for example, or any place along those lines, where people will go out of their way to get your wallet out of your pocket. It's just sad how in many places people have gotten so self important that they fail to realize that what it comes down to is that we as a species need to rely heavily on each other to thrive and survive, and I think that in no way is the media or technology helping that at all. All it's basically doing is separating us further by "bringing us together". Unfortunately, most people don't want to step out of their comfort zones to find this out/accept that fact.

I know this is a small bump but this is an amazing thread. Andrew was right when he said that the world was a different place when our parents and grandparents were groing up. One of the things I love about my religion is that it promotes strong family and community relationships, and organizes service projects and community charities like, every week. As most of you know I'm preparing to serve a mission, and in that preparation I've become pretty spiritual and serious about church related things. A mission is all about service, and these days I literally am on the look out for someone with a broken down car that I can help, or give a ride to a hithchiker, because I love the feeling I get when I do service! My friends and I used to go to the Family Crisis Center (place where abused children can get away from their parents in high risk situations) and put on little puppet shows for the kids, then do coloring activities with them, etc. My friend was featured in a Mormon magazine because he did 100 hours of that service, all volunteer (I only got to like, 80-something, it was ski season :( haha) and it felt so awesome to know that we were doing something to help others, free of charge. I think everyone on this site should take a few hours out of their week, and volunteer somewhere in your community. Yeah, you may miss a few sessions at the skatepark, but you will be so happy when you are finished, and you will feel so good. CHALLENGE: I challenge everyone on this website to do 20 hours of community service by the time I go on my mission, October 15! I'm gonna go make a thread about it right now!

That's a top 10 post in the SR history.

I highly agree with the downgrade of the society of young people. I guess that the biggest lie that the media are fooling people with is the way they appeal to the young persons need of independence, actually making them fully dependent on the mainstream but thinking they're not. No one can effectively tell people and teach them to think on their own on what they do and who they are. They just go with the flow. Also the people have no moral authorities, with the downfall of catholic church and basically nothing to make up for it to lay a strong set of moral rules. Sometimes my dad is like 'why don't you go and meet random people' when he's see me sitting at home when none of my friends are available, and Im always telling him how the society has downgraded from since he was at my age.

The other day I was at the mall near my house and there was tons of cops and ambulances and news crews, and I was wondering what was happening so me and my friends started running and we finally saw where everyone was. They were at the pet store in the mall, there was blood all over and I asked around and I found out a girl broke up with her boyfriend and he shot himself in the head, in the middle of the pet store, in front of little kids, over a fucking girl. I don't understand what is so wrong with people now, I could never imagine even harming myself, and I know kids in FUCKING NINTH GRADE WHO HAVE BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL MULTIPLE TIMES BECAUSE OF TRYING TO KILL THEMSELVES, this upsets me so much. I really don't understand how someone can possibly harm, or even take away their ONLY life, when there is so much to be happy about and grateful for. Your girlfriend breaks up with you? Yeah it sucks, but at least you fucking have a roof over your head and a decent meal for dinner, when there's thousands of kids who will eat dirt tonight for dinner and not wake up in the morning. I don't understand what's happening to our society, when i don't know a single person my age who doesn't drink or do drugs, when I know multiple people who cut themselves, it's absolutely mind blowing and it kills me.

Most kids today (in my opinion) are spoiled, immature, and just sometimes psychotic.

thats really messed up, good thing you were looking out for her.

people can be assholes, and if they have the chance to be one they usually will just for the reasons you said, attention seeking emotionals.
