and andy a weld is always stronger than the metal, the only thing that would make it break is if something was wrong with the weld.
mmmm nah, sorry john but base metal is almost always stronger than the weld. for a couple of reasons:
1 welds dont have an organized grain like the base metal, meaning less tensile strength
2 filler metal is made to be easily welded with but still keep strength in mind
really the only time the weld is equal to the base in strength is when the same alloy filler is used and the finished piece is then heat treated.
and about a fork design, just play around with dimensions. go maybe try a little more or a little less offset from stock and see how you like it then go for strength. or just keep stock dimensions and work on structural design. everyone on here knows how and why forks break, just make a design that fixes the problems of stock forks and keep improving on the design over time.
