There is MIG, TIG, ARC, and the occasional Oxy/Acetylene welding
MIG has a wire fed through it, so you don't have to maintain an arc legnth/strike an arc, etc... You have an oxygen (?) tank on the welder that you have to get filled when it runs out. You can buy wires for different metals including steel, copper, aluminum, etc... Aluminum wire is thin, so it is a lot easier to get a spool gun for aluminum welding, but that is expensive. Conclusion: MIG is the easiest, and produces some freakin' clean beads if you get the settings right.
TIG has a foot pedal to control the voltage, an electrode to actually weld with, and a torch to complete the circuit with the electrode and metal. It is the most difficult method of welding, but can weld the most metals out of the three. You have to be moving the torch in a circle, pushing down the electrode to maintain the arc legnth, and be constantly adjusting the foot pedal to get a proper bead. Oh and there isn't a lot of smoke coming from a TIG, and there is no slag on the bead. You have to have a tungsten gas tank on the welder, and get it filled when it runs out. Conclusion: TIG is expensive and takes a LOT of hard work, but the welds are the cleanest out of the three.
ARC is my favorite out of the three, because it takes some work to get used to but I think it is the most fun. You can weld whatever metals you can get the electrodes for, but aluminum electrodes are expensive. You set the voltage on the machine, then control everything else with your hand. It takes a few days/weeks of practice to get a good bead laid down, but the results are more satisfying since you know how much work it took you to put that metal together. ARC is definatly the best welder to learn on.
