its cause threads in forks are like the holes in dotted paper that you tear out. They have a weak area that can break pretty easily. But threadless has no breakable area. Try snapping a solid steel pipe in half. its pretty hard. So since there arent threads, you need something to hold your threadless, slippery parts together, hence, compression. Compression squeezes everything together
