Straight Edge refers to a lifestyle and youth movement that started within the hardcore punk subculture whose adherents make a lifetime commitment to refrain from drinking alcohol, using tobacco products, and taking recreational drugs. The term was coined by the 1980s hardcore punk band Minor Threat in the song "Straight Edge". If anyone else has stuff to add, please do.

Advertising yourself as straight edge makes appear just as shitty as the people that are doing the activities you don't do.

I feel the same way about straight edge as I religion. If she happens to read it, whatever, im just using her as an example, but... Shelby goes on facebook bragging about Jesus, how she loves him, how shes going to bible study, blah blah. If your so religious, why do you need to advertise it, share your love with God, don't show off to everyone. People that sport the Straight Edge label, look the same way in my eyes. I have friends that don't drink, smoke, whatever, they don't go bragging about it to people. Keep it to yourself. When you go babbling your straight edge, wearing patches, hating on other peoples activities, your just putting yourself out there to get hated on.

Used to be hardcore straight-edge, now i'm the farthest from that you can possibly be.

I used to brag about it and rub it in others faces how stupid they were. I realize I'm a huge hypocrite but whatever, I started reading and opening my mind and I realized everything I had thought about psychoactives and the scene that accompanies them was wrong.

Some kids I know hear stuff about me now and think I'm crazy, but it's all subjective. Respect for everyone is a good thing.

There's a difference between being Straightedge and sober, usually being straightedge means you're a holier-than-thou douchebag with X's on your hands, but honestly I give props and respect to the people that have enough discipline for themselves to stay that way, but I have less respect for people that flaunt it.

My little brother is straightedge and is one of the most chill accepting people around. I drink and smoke like a mothafucka and he has never judged me or any of my friends. Most people that advertise themselv I am a boy it to make people think they are something special and recognize them.

I tested my own willpower (i guess that's the right word) by not smoking until after age 18. I've had plenty of opportunities to smoke since probably age 13 or 14, but I'd always distance myself from it and I'm actually super proud of myself for making a promise to myself and sticking with it. Now I drink on weekends and stuff, and smoke every few weeks.

I don't understand how someone could not want to try drinking or smoking at least once, to just see how those things effect you. I'd say after 1 time you could decide whether or not that is something you would like to keep doing.
