what's the low down on home-made forks , like ive seen pics and stuff but is it worth the time and effort ?

well i obviously wouldn't intend on making them if i couldn't weld
i more meant the fact that ive seen a fair few pictures of people that have made forks but never any follow up on if they lasted long enough to be worth making
