Buying My First SLR

I was looking at D40's and maybe Rebel XT. I'm looking to really get into photography but not too extreme to start off with. I just want a decent camera that comes with an 18-55mm lens and is compatible with alot of accesories. I've read about the D40 and Rebels and I think i'm gonna get a D40x w/ 10.2 megapixels. I want to get a flash that i can clip into the hot-foot (i think that's what it's called) as well. I was going to buy a camera body and just buy a fisheye lens for it without the 18-55mm lens but most people i've talked to said that you really need the lens in order to use the camera to it's fullest. Any recomendations for a camera other than the D40?

Ps. I'm not looking to spend over $400 for everything at first.

Here's the link where i was going to buy from/bid on. (http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-D40x-10-2...ZViewItem?hash=item350059028446&_trksid=p4295)

its called a hotshoe by the way and just so your aware a fisheye for an slr is at least 500 dollars so not a good idea. also megapixels dont matter unless your working with something like a magazine.

dont get the rebel, they are crap.
Flashes can be expensive depending on what you want.
I dont suggest buying a fisheye and flashes straight after you get a new cam cos you need to learn and get better.
Tom on grahams account.

i was in the same situation as you, trying to decide what is betterl, d40 vs. xti. thankfully i got the xti, and i love it. its just a better camera body than the d40 and it comes with a better kit lens.

dont get any new stuff until you are comfortable with the camera. learn a little more before getting an expensive lens.

also, you probably shouldn't buy this kind of stuff on ebay.

Nikon owns Canon :]
Get a Nikon D40, there a good first SLR and easy to use.

all brand loyalties aside, you're really not going to see any differences quality-wise between an entry level nikon/canon. what it really comes down to is how each camera feels ergonomically to you. go to a store and play around with an xt/d40, and get whichever one you feel more comfortable with.

Canon owns Nikon in certain areas and Nikon owns Canon in certain areas. Simple as that.
Like Sean said, go to a store and mess around with them. That will solve your problems. Everyone on here is just going to tell you to get whatever brand they have, so just go find out for yourself what you want.

yes you should get a d40.

no, you should not put a 30 dollar fisheye on an slr. don't even think about it. like, block it out of your mind right now and never think about it again. actually, pretend you never even though about doing that.
