Im not here to start discussion on how to download songs/videos/whatever so dont lock this.

I just got round to reading up something on the internet about piracy, this guys views on it or someshit.

I thought it seemed like a pretty good topic to discuss.

What do you guys think about piracy?
Do you think it is hurting the economy, or that the money you dont spend from not buying a CD gets spent on something else and supports them or maybe you think that piracy is not affecting anyone ( you wouldnt have bought that overpriced software anyway)...

post your ideas up. No arguing

I already said that Im not asking for help on being an evil person.

Its a controversial topic. Controversy is interesting, and good.

When it is referred to as "piracy," that makes it sound evil. There is nothing wrong with getting artists' music for free. The artist should be stoked that people actually want to listen to there music, and not worry so much about the money. Because if people like the music enough to download it, there is a good chance the artist is making some kind of money. As far as it effecting the economy, trust me, our economy isn't in the shape its in because people aren't buying CDs.

oh, and Lars is a flaming douche for going after Napster.

that stuff is robbing the artists though. so there is something wrong with it. it is stealing. dur.

same thing goes for movies. they spend millions of dollars to make it and produce it, and when you guys go and just download it, not one thing goes back to them.

making these entertainment cd's and movies cost money, they should be getting it back in return. not a bunch of little douchebag kids downloading it and crap like that

maybe if it didnt cost $10+ to see Vin Diesel race some neon-clad piece of shit, or Julia Roberts do what she calls "acting," i would be more apt to go to the theaters, instead of download bootlegs.

and if cd's full of beats made by drum machines, and overpayed guys with diamonds in their mouth didnt cost $13, we wouldnt have this issue in the first place.

The record companies are robbing companies. Artists don't make shitt off of their albums. I wouldn't mind buying albums if they were between $5-10, but $20 for a CD with 2 or 3 goods songs on it is a rip off. I haven't bought music in years because of it. If i support the band, i'll goto their show and let them know.

Software prices are ridiculous. I'm not even going to get into them. Student discounts it a little more reasonable but i still won't buy programs. There is usually a free alternative to most programs anyway.

Games are a different story. I bought all of my PS2 game except for imports which i pirated. Half of the reason I pirated those games is because there wasn't a easy way to play backups until about a year ago, and i don't even play the games anymore (beatmania iidx if yoiu want to know). I pirate old PC games, but i have most of them on floppys somewhere in my house that im not gonna dig for if i can download it in 2 minutes. I don't think ill download PS3 games yet, the thing isn't even cracked yet anyway. I play online with PS3 way too much to be messing with backups already.

Movies are fucking crazy. The only time i see movies at the theater is $5 night at franklin mills. I used to watch the screeners but im over them, ill just wait for bluray rip so i can watch it on my HDTV. If the movie is good enough ill buy it, and movies usually suck these days. I wish you could buy actual film reels instead of dvds and shit, i'd be all over them. Actors get paid WAY too much to be in movies, too much money is spent on movies, fuckk movies.

I agree with Brian like 100%. I will download music or movies but games are a waste to download. I will also get software cause I'm not gonna pay $500 for a Photoshop program I don't know how to use. Fuck that.

whilst i never ever pay for music, i gota say i can feel bad.
i kinda feel that if you like an artist, and respect there music, why steal from them?
but at the same time i feel, whats the point in going all the way to the shop when i can download it in seconds.
so for me, its about laziness :p

btw another thing about music

People should be sharing their talent, not selling it. I mean paying to goto a concert is cool, and maybe 5 bucks for a CD, but the artists are scumbags. 1,000 people downloaded your CD, your pissed, why? Because you can't buy another Mercades that your never going to drive and rub it in everyone's faces on cribs? Same goes for professional sports players and actors. Docters should be making millions, they save lives.

so should teachers, they teach how to spell "doctor" correctly.
OMG Grammer Nazi
*Grammar.

I don't really think pirating music effects the economy or a band's paycheck, if anything it can give the band more publicity which can pay off later.

If you buy a band's CD directly from them at a show I'm pretty sure they pocket the money, same thing with t-shirt sales.

Every time a band I really like has like a "tip" jar on their merch table i'll throw money into that. I know they get that directly, and not their labels or whatever.
