unlike most people in this thread I actually know what im talking about and im not really biased at one brand at all
the bottom ine is I think nikons are a little bit harder to work for a beginner than canons
also the quality of canons all around is better
so I think the rebel is better than the d40

ive got a d40.
i love it.
once you learn how to use it it makes so much more sense than the canons, although ive never played with a canon for very long...i was just lost with shit on it

Actually the Nikon d40 is targeted more towards people who have never used a DSLR before and are getting their first one. They are very easy to use and setup. That was the whole point behind them making the d40, to give beginners a camera to start off with and learn.
Also, I've been reading reviews and the majority of them say that Nikon's are superior in build quality and feel to Canons.
thats just my 2 cents.
