I dunno about the build quality. D80 has a plastic/polycarbonate body from what i know, and 30D is metal, although its about $100 more. Canons feel way more solid than Nikons

yeah that is true. also my friend who is getting into avanced photography got a Pentax, its good for beginers, everything is easy to set up and they are only 400 bucks. the only downside is that you can only buy pentax lenses if you wanna get a new lens

I heard that you can use Nikon lenses on Pentax cameras but not vice versa. I can't remember if that was with an adapter or not, but thats a plus for anyone who has a pentax.

unlike most people in this thread I actually know what im talking about and im not really biased at one brand at all
the bottom ine is I think nikons are a little bit harder to work for a beginner than canons
also the quality of canons all around is better
so I think the rebel is better than the d40
omg man seroiusly what hell is up with you in all ur post u always have something negative even about serjay doing backflips u said that he was probably one of those guys just like who learns flip but cant even tailwhip seriously damn

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEVES
here are some good and bad things about the d40 and rebel xt, xti

Good things about the d40 are:
1/500 second flash sync (the fastest shutter speed you can use with flash)
its lite (17oz)

Bad things:
no ISO 100
only 2.5 fps

Good things about rebel xt, xti
8mp (xt) | 10.1mp (xti)
ISO 100
3.0 fps

Bad things:
1/200 flash sync
1.8" lcd on xt
heavier (18oz xti | 17.1oz xt)

So really, it all depends on what type of photography your going to be doing. If you need a fast flash sync, go with Nikon. If you need ISO 100, then go with Canon. I have a Nikon and I love it, but im not going to say they are the best. In my opinion both Nikon and Canon both have there strong points. Go to a store and test them out, this way you know what your getting before you buy.

thats all

i have a nikon d40x. and i was looking at getting either the nikon or the canon so guy that was informing me on the differences between the camera let me take a few pictures with each of the same shot. and the nikon took alot better picture. the colors were definetly alot better.

you cant really judge the colors by shooting both of them
do you know what the white balance and shooting modes were at?
because I know on the canons you can increase the color tone and saturation and you get colors that are too good to look real

in every test i've seen done the d40 has gotten better colors than the rebel. d40x is a different story, i'm sure the 30d has better colors for a similiar price range since its got a better sensor, but on the lower end d40 is definitely the way to go.

and you can adjust color tone and saturation in post processing anyway, so its not much of an added benefit to be messing with them on camera.

+ you can adjust them on the d40 also (or at least I would think you could, I can on my d70s)
