Slave flash's.

Can someone just briefly explain them to me?

and,
-How to choose one over another.
-Can you use them as a normal on camera hot shoe flash?
-How there wireless? ( I know they detect the flash from the camera but is that all?)
-Is there anything else i should know?

- The best slaves to get are Pockwizard Plus 2/Pocketwizard or Pocketwizard Multimax.. But these are all super expensive so you best bet it to get Ebay slaves(just go on ebay and search flash slaves)

-Well the slave is what wirelesssly connects you camera to an external flashgun. So you dont need slaves to use you flash on ur camera as normal, you only need slaves when u want to mount ur flashes on a tripod somewhere else(not connected to your camera hotshoe)

-This is for Radio Slaves.
They are wireless because u have a Transmitter and a Reciever. The transmitter fits onto your camera hotshoe, and you flashgun(s) fit on th reciever(s) also via Hotshoe witch is on the reciever.

-Umm nothing else you need to know, i suggest you get radio slaves from ebay. Or if you have the money then get Pocketwizards. Or you can go for other slaves like optical slaves and stuff, but i dont know much about them so i havent much to say for them.

I know that Canon speedlights can fire wirelessly, i think its infared, optical slave or something? I remember Casey and Mike doing it awhile ago with their flashes.

I know that you can use the pop up flash on Nikon's to fire your slaves.

Plus, Nikon has the best flash system to date. (as stated by PC Photo Mag)

does it flash, or is it infrared? because i dont want the pop up flash lighting up the picture if i've got an off camera flash set up.

so yea I guess it flashes, but that is for Nikon flashes..so I'm not sure if that works with others as well.

Sean and Reeves what sort of slaves are they if you need the pop-up flash to trigger them ? are they optical or called something else?

And i dont like the sound of pop up flash used to trigger, radio slaves are better i think

optical senses light
infrared sends an invisible light that does not effect the exposure. unless you have an infrared camera
radio slaves are the way to go. nothing can interfere with their signal, and they can go up to like 200 ft. away. and trigger a camera.

Could probably work as one but it's not mean't for scooters.

Most brackets tend to have some type of grip so the metal doesn't kill your hand.

Is there any possible way of connecting a slave to a camera if the camera doesnt have a hotshoe?

I basically have an SLR but it doesnt have a hotshoe and i wanted to buy some flashes

all SLR's have hotshoes, im guessing ur camera is a point and shoot in an SLR body.

I am pretty sure you cant have an external flash without a hotshoe, unless there is special 1s with different ways to connect them.

Yeah but its not quite point and shoot exactly, it has all the manual settings and shit...
i sort of want to sell it now and get a canon of some description as i want to get a slave or something

I've had my XTI for not evne a month and i love it, if your going to get a DSLR i would highly recommend a canon.
