I think chatbox because its community not just a single person. You could ask questions to everyone and everything instead of making a thread

A chatbox is a mini chatroom at the top of the forum homepage.

IRC wouldn't be a bad idea if we were doing a more chatroom dedicated thing. As of now it seems like most everyone is leaning towards a chatbox.

When I was a mod on Freerider2Forums (I know, what a badass), we used Xat. It worked pretty well.

Chatbox is on the home page and what you type on there everyone sees. With a facebook style chat, you can have individual conversations with individual people, like facebook.
