Can someone explain how the flashes work that go on the hotshoe?

They connect to the thing and when you push the button it triggers the flash and it goes off. Obviously.

Yeah, there for film and DSLR camera's. It's all good.

Good call erik. Yeah it just screws onto my lens, It isn't to bad but i have to crop almost all of my pictures to get the vig out of the picture. But it was really cheap and as soon as i start my new job I'm saving for the tokina and a battery grip.
