Edit: holy bujeezus this is long. I should tone it down a bit haha. I'll wait till someone replies.
Super-duper-uber bump. Sorry.
Well I read this thread a while back and have been meaning to bump it, because I want to hear more about people's riding. This thread is awesome. Props to Dibbs for making it. I guess I'll start...
I think it started when my oldest sister gave my other sister one of those dumb skateboards with removable handlebars for her birthday, I think in 1999. I was so jealous, the thing made some weird noise if you pressed this button in the handlebars, haha it was rad. It didn't even have griptape, it just had this weird design of these purple and green creatures. So that made me want a scooter, and I begged and begged for one...
So my dad got me this heavy-ass scooter, called a Glider IIK. It was an old-a style scooter, with real metal shock springs and this huugge, awesome brake. I was only about 7 or 8 at the time, so I wasn't doin any tricks or anything. But I could do gnarly no footers and no handers and indian airs, haha I thought i was the shiz. But then i guess I put it away and I forgot about it for the longest time, and then a few years later I tried to get it out again but it was like broken or something, so my dad got me a new one.
Again, I started doing all those no footers and x-ups. I remember my best trick was a no footed x-up down a curb, haha that was hard. Somehow i got this book, called the Ultimate Guide to Scooters, something like that, and I read that thing countless times. It had some trick tuts and I remember getting so frustrated because I couldn't tailwhip, even with the directions from the book. Keep in mind that I still wasn't "serious" about riding.
So I guess i rode off and on, using it mainly as a means of travel to go to friends houses. But eventually probably fall 05, I discovered this thing called the internet, and I started looking for sites. One of the first ones I found was the Wizard Collectibles site, I remember watching the videos there. I remember i was amazed by them, haha, just because the guy 360ed flat. John Belville was his name I think. Another site I found that really opened up my eyes was Ryan Whetstones site "scooters only"
http://www.geocities.com/rericwartin/home.html I still watch that summer 05 vid every now and then. I owe a lot to him for really starting to get me interested in riding. There was the Illusion Scooter team site...lol. Eventually, I think I found the DXG site, and it had a link to SR. But I didn't sign up for it, god I wish I had.
For Christmas I got a new a2 scooter, and that took some getting used to after riding taht old heavy scooter. I kinda was serious, but really wasn't, I still couldn't whip or anything. I would do lots of back scooterflip footplants on curbs, haha I don't really remember much else from Spring 06.
Finally, I re-discovered the Scooter Resource. I signed up, forgot my password, and made a new account in July (Independence Day, to be exact). Sorry about that mods/admin. I really found out about the true potential of scooter riding, and found out about the scene. I didn't really post much, but then I was a complete post-whore (still am a bit I guess). I guess it was maybe August or September when I finally could tailwhip and 360. I was sooo happy when I could do those, wow my friends didn't believe me when I told them i could do those tricks at first.
During this winter I did a lot of flatland crap in my basement. hehe, think Easter-type stuff. inverted pogo barspins, pogo spins, no handed inverted pogos, stuff like that. I got a pro model for Christmas, and man it was heavy.
And now..I do a lot of mannys, barspins, fakies, scooterfakies. I still only ride street, having gone to a skatepark once. I try to be as creative as I can be, and not do crappy scooterflips and tailwhips all the time (although i do a lot of doubles off my wedge kicker). I ride new a/b foldy. They're awesome. I still suck at riding.
So yeah...if you read all of that, congratulations, because I think i've been typing this post for like 15 minutes...haha
