I've done Purple a few times.
I did blue and yellow on my lacrosse stick thing when I used to play.
Hot glue DOES work, you put the glue where you don't want the die to go on the PU, then you peel it off after the wheel dries.

I've also watched videos on youtube, where rollerbladers taken their skates apart and dyed their boots and stuff. It looked real sick.

My Red YAK dyed black using rit dye,
3-4hrs isnt long enough as you can see it hasnt soaked all the way through.
I would say leave it overnight (7 - 10hrs).
