i got a samsung sumthing mini dv, does the job plus fisheye makes it even better.

Pretty much get whatever. You might wanna run a head cleaner, than stick to 1 brand on tapes. You probably won't have any problems if you don't do the head cleaner though, but stick to 1 brand of tapes.

and another really n00b question: how can i tell if my comp has a firewire port? like what does it look like? it'll do me a fat lot of good if i buy a firewire that won't even go into my computer.

USB cable is gross. Just buy a firewire card and wire package on ebay for like 10-15 bucks, its worth it. Than just look up on google how to install a pci card, all you have to do is take out a screw and a dust cover, push the card into the slot and put the screw back in.

Firewire is better than USB for digital video because the data transfer rate is constant. With USB the data transfer rate is up and down like every second, the video isn't as high quality and its just overall worse.
