First Car

My first car was a 1997 Jetta 2.0 5spd with 221,000 miles on it. Ran perfectly every day in any weather, never gave me a single issue. My friend even had a mk2 Jetta with over 400,000 miles on the stock motor. If you find a decent one, they are perfectly reliable. And they're dirt cheap, and so are the parts for them.

my dad had one, my stepsister has one, two of my friends have them.. they all hate/hated them. and fixing them generally costs more than other companies because you (generally) have to get parts from overseas, and some mechanics even refuse to work on them. i have friends that have mechanics in the family and even they say to stay away from VW.

and relating to what tony said, get anything owned by an old person. usually better condition than something owned by a younger person.

My family still has our 97 Jetta. It has a 2.0 and it has over 300,000 miles on it now. We have never done any engine or trans work on it and it still runs better than my truck I have now. So all VW engines are not bad, just the ones that are not maintained properly. The windows and AC dont work too well but that is the only problem with it.

Not to thread jack, but I LOVE my Jetta <3 If taken care of properly, you can get them to last forever. Look for mk3 jettas on craigslist. There's nothing better than a well-built German sedan. Trust.

When I got it:

Then my wheels got stolen out of my driveway........

It's automatic but very low miles, pretty cheap, relatively young for the price. Only thing you need to think about is oil changes, they tend to use oil slightly quicker than most cars, that being said I've put ~33,000 miles on mine since I got it and have never had any issues with it. It's not a sedan but meh.

I have never had a saturn so I do not know how they are. I would buy another Jetta. A while back I found a ton of them for 3K or less. Its all up to you though. If you do get a Jetta, get a 5 speed. It makes them so much more fun.

Not listening to a bunch of scooter kids would be a start. Get what you want, do YOUR research and find a car. I would never listen to what any of these people have to say when buying something other then scooter parts..

Just an FYI, most of us in this thread apply in one or more of the following ways. 1) we have cars and have gone through the process of buying our first cars. 2) have a wide knowledge of cars. 3) have a life outside of the scooter world and actually know more than just scooters.

The guy I contacted about that Nissan Altima sent me some more pictures of the flaws. It has rust in odd spots, but it looks like it's just surface rust. Not really a big deal, but could it be removed somehow?
